Shampoos For Stinky Hounds

Bathtime is a word spoken in hushed tones in our house. It’s not something either of the dogs are a fan of and thankfully it’s not something that we have to go through very often as typically they’re both pretty clean. Apart from when they roll in the dreaded stinky stuff which has to be every dog owners most hated smell. Finding the right shampoo for Josie and Edie hasn’t been simple and earlier in the year we noticed that both of them had a bad case of dandruff when the season started to change. We weren’t sure if what we were using at the time was working as well as it once did despite having a good list of ingredients so we wanted to find something that could help with that and these are all the shampoo products that not only get their coats clean but help with any flakey skin too.

The Collars & Harnesses That We Use At The Moment

I’m often asked about the collars and harnesses we use for Josie and Edie and it wasn’t until Josie bounced into our lives did I realise just how hard finding a good collar is for a sighthound. They have specific requirements with their longe necks and small heads and using any old dog collar often isn’t quite what they need. There are lots on the market, some good, some bad and some insanely expensive and it can be difficult to know what’s going to actually work for your dog and what will end up in the cupboard unused. Having something that's hardwearing, washable or wipeable is key for us whilst the girls are young and like to run around like loons rolling in stinky stuff and these are collar and harnesses that have passed our tough standards.

The Highs & Lows Of Owning A Hound

Although I’d like to say there are absolutely no downsides to owning a sighthound, there are but I think that’s the case when it comes to any breed. Just like humans, there is no way any living creature can be perfect but the highs always outweigh the lows and for me, these are the ups and downs of the breed.

Our Dog Walk Essentials

I never thought I’d be a girl who has a specific bag for dog walking but here we are. When walking two dogs you want to be as hands-free as possible and because female clothing rarely has pockets unless I’m wearing my Barbour it’s rare I’ve got enough space for everything I need and to be hands-free. For my birthday I had one request for a gift and that was a dog walking bag from Redhound For Dogs and here are more details on the bag itself and everything we generally use day to day!

Why We Chose To Work With A 1-2-1 Dog Trainer

Dog training is something that for a long time was a sore subject in our household. We’d taken Josie to our local training dog programme when she was 9 months old and got through the bronze training top of the class but then when we moved onto the silver we left halfway through after being told that we loved our dog too much for her to learn anymore. Which is a statement I simply do not accept, not wanting to use harsh forms of punishment doesn’t mean you can’t train your dog. After feeling at a loss with the same issues again and again we finally decided it was time to get in touch with a one on one trainer and see what we could do as I knew that Josie was nowhere near a lost cause but she’s not always the easiest to get through to. So this is our experience of finding a trainer and why it’s been such a good thing for us and our relationship with Josie.

4 Of Our Favourite Small Businesses To Shop From

We’d only had Josie a week when I realised that when it came to her collar and coat I was undoubtedly going to have purchase something online as the selection for hounds in our local pet shops is absolutely abysmal and still is. And whilst shopping online has its drawbacks something that having a long-necked and oddly shaped dog has given me is the chance to support small businesses and that is something I try and do whenever I can. Over the past couple of years, I’ve certainly developed my favourites so just in case you’re in need of doing some shopping for your odd but beautiful dog these are our favourite places to shop.
