the joy of knitting

-this post is a paid partnership with LoveCrafts-

If I could go back to my twenty-year-old self and tell that her in a few years instead of going out shopping she would be spending her money on yarn and teaching herself how to knit, she probably wouldn’t have believed you. A few years ago, during a particularly anxious time in my life, I taught myself how to knit and it’s been something that I’ve gone back to time and time again when I’ve need something to help ease an anxious and overthinking brain. Now more than ever I’ve needed that little something in my day to day life that I can turn when things feel a little overwhelming. So, today’s post is all about the joy of knitting and how to knit yourself a super simple patchwork blanket.

why knitting?

I can’t say I’ve ever been a naturally crafty person but it’s always a skill that I’ve admired. Being able to create something beautiful from just one or two things is such an amazing skill to have and I’m so happy that I’ve finally begun to master it. Not only is it awesome to be able to create something yourself but there is undeniably something more special about taking the time to make something rather than buy it and even though it might not be absolutely perfect that’s what makes it even more unique.

For me, as I mentioned earlier I chose to learn how to knit when I wasn’t feeling too amazing mentally and wanted something to challenge and really distract me. As soon as I start to click those needles together I find my brain slows down and I can focus on what is in front of me which is something I so often find myself struggling with. Seeing the yarn come together into whatever I’m making fills me with so much joy and before I know it I feel so much better.

Over the past month or so I’ve finally ticket something of my to-knit list which was a super simple patchwork blanket. On the LoveCrafts website there is an abundance of free knitting patterns and the particular pattern I used is the garter stitch square pattern to create the outline for my blanket.

Tools

how to

  • Cast on 28 stitches

  • Knit 52 rows

  • Cast off

  • Sew the blanket squares together with yarn of your choice
