All The Little Things That Make The Colder Months Feel Kinder

The picture-perfect postcard version of winter seems idyllic, but the real thing is far from it and it can be a tough season for everyone. Once the festive season has passed and we started getting into the really cold months I notice that I always feel my absolute worst and everything is such a struggle. The days are so dark and gloomy and obviously, by the second of January you’ve exhausted all your cutest cold-weather outfits and you don’t feel like you can face another jumper for at least another six months. So here are the little things that are making the end of autumn and the beginning of winter feel a lot kinder right now.

bathes

I’m a bath girl all year round, even when it’s 30 degrees outside I will still happily climb inside of a warm bath. There is nothing more soothing to me after a long day when it’s miserable outside then getting into a bath with all your favourite products. Showers are the perfect pick me up when you’ve not got much time for a soak but bathes > showers every time. And I like to turn my bathes into quite the event with the following in tow;

  • my laptop placed on the toilet seat to watch an episode of the series I’m watching at the moment (do be careful of very steamy rooms and laptops though).

  • a face mask, I typically always try and do a mask when I have a bath as it’s the perfect development time for one.

  • a shower oil to lather up with, there is nothing more luxurious.

  • an ice cold glass of water, a little bit of a strange one but having a cool drink to hand when you’re busy simmering away in the bath is a perfect combination.

  • a nourishing hair mask is something that is key at this time of year when your tresses are undoubtedly feeling a little stressed and in dire need of some nourishment.

practical clothing

I wrote an entire post about my practical clothing musts the other day and over the past few years, I’ve become a true convert to the practicality over style way of life. Long gone are the days of having purple feet because I was still wearing ballet flats when it was ice cold outside. One of the biggest reasons I used to struggle so much in the colder months before is because I wasn’t dressing appropriately for them at all. Getting a proper winter coat, hat, scarf and a good pair of boots has meant that I don’t mind getting out in the cold, it’s nowhere near as daunting as it once was because I’m not shaking like a leaf as soon as I step out of the door. Of course, when it’s blowing a gale and the rain is beating down then it’s not still not exactly inviting to step outside but it’s a lot better when you’re somewhat prepared for the colder and wetter climate.

something to look forward to

When we think about the colder months it’s really easy to think they’re just September to December but in the UK we can still be experiencing snow well into April. Once the festive season is over it’s all too easy to feel a little deflated as the promise of blissfully warm summer days is a long way off and there often doesn’t feel like there’s that much to look forward to. The tradition of new years resolutions isn’t something that I really do anymore as more often than not I find them demotivating as so much can change in a year. Having something to work towards throughout those colder months is something that I’ve found to be unbelievably important. Here are some of the things that I’m going to be working on in the next few months;

  • Knitting

  • Reading

  • Working on personal projects.

  • Upping my cooking skills.

making your environment as cosy as possible

It’s inevitable that we’re going to be spending more time inside in the colder months which is why making your space feel as cosy as possible is key. I know so many go all out and change their entire house but I’m not so into that and just like to make small changes here and there to embrace the cold and feel super cosy at home. This how I change up my living space to make it as welcoming as possible;

  • A winter tog duvet and jersey bedding.

  • Blankets upon blankets on the sofa.

  • Candles or aroma diffusers.

  • A hot water bottle, not technically something for your home but the best thing you can curl up with after a long day.
